View of Paris from top of Pompidou

Last time I was in Paris I sorta had a sucky time. I was only there for about 40 hours, it rained the whole time and I spent most of that either lost or stuck in my hotel. This time I had much better company, and more time to see the city. Yesterday Tara and I fully made the most of it. Photos and a play by play after the jump.

Breakfast in ParisWe started off the day with breakfast at our hotel, that would be mostly fruit and fruit jelly on toast. And if you are Tara, by “fruit jelly” I mean chocolate.

We didn’t waste too much time on this because we knew we had a lot of ground to cover that day and couldn’t be late to much of it. First thing we did was book it up to the catacombs, then stood in line outside for quite a while. Apparently they only let 200 people in there at once so we had to wait our turn. Once in, we saw bones. And a lot of them at that.

It took about an hour to walk about a mile through them and on the way out we were checked to make sure we hadn’t stolen any bones. Ew. Of course we hadn’t, but others had tried. After that we got back on another train where we’re pretty sure a little girl developed a huge crush on Tara.

That train took us to Sacre Coeur.

This, being the tallest point in the city offered some fantastic views which we soaked up as much as we could of. After that… more trains! This time we met up with Souris and Silvio (friends from LA who were in town visiting family) and some of their friends (who quickly became our friends) and took a longer train ride a bit out of the city.

While the palace is a serious draw in and of it’s own right:

Our excuse for the trip was a little more contemporary:

Yes, your eyes are not fooling you, in case you hadn’t heard there is currently a Jeff Koons exhibit in the palace. It’s insane, and easily the best Koons exhibition I’ve ever seen, and the best setting for his work yet. The rest of my pics of the exhibition are in this set. I’ve seen Koons before a few times, and his work in a white cube gallery space looks the same no matter where it is, the juxtaposition of his super sleek work in the overly elaborate setting of Versailles was unstoppable and whoever originally came up with the idea for that should win an award. I know some people are not psyched about the combo of the two, but I think it was perfect and an amazing way to expose fans of one to the beauty of the other.

After that we headed back to the city and a home cooked meal with awesome company which was immensely better than just hitting up another restaurant near our hotel.

After that it was late, and we were tired and still jetlagged so we said farewell and took off to catch a train back. At the station, we noticed that some locals were making themselves right at home.

Possibly too much, yes that dude has his hand down his pants.

After all that we were pooped and looking forward to sleeping soon. Tara pulled that off before I did.
