From the 2017 Kickstarter campaign:
“Saturday Night Massacre was always hard to quickly explain. The few who remember it mostly call it storypunk, and we can’t really argue with that. How would you describe captivating prose spoken and layered on top of noisy soundscapes, often performed live in front of strange projections in some of the sketchiest places around? We thought it was just weird art, something that looked for and crashed past boundaries, when the Internet was still on dial-up, but we were young then, and refusing to define it was part of how it was defined. It was a different time, and sadly much of what we produced then has been lost to the ages, but it seems like people who were there still look back fondly on the memories … which is why it makes sense now for us to revisit our old work, to see where it might lead us in 2017. The technology and the culture has changed so much, but we thought some of you might want to take that journey with us.
“Hi. We’re Sean Bonner & Wil Wheaton. If you know either if us you know we’re fans of music and stories. If you know both of us you know we’ve been publicly collaborating on creative projects for more than 20 years now, and while a big part of Saturday Night Massacre was the anonymity of those involved, it’s something we’re both really proud to have been a part of, and something we’ve been thinking about bringing back.
“With 2017 shaping up to be a shitshow already, we felt that the atmosphere was finally perfect for us to release something new. Our plan is to dig through our archives and see if anything is salvageable, though some of this material hasn’t seen the light of day since our last show in ‘92 so what shape it’s in and how relevant it will be remains to be seen. We’ll take what we can and weave it into something new. We do not want this just to be a rehash of things we’ve already made, so it’s probably safe to expect 80/20 on this, with 80% being freshly created work for this 2017 project. We’ll create some audio tracks and some video accompaniments.”
The campaign was successful and the ep was released at the time, and is still available on Bandcamp.
