Peter Atwood on motivations

I’ve been a big fan of Atwood Knives & Tools for quite awhile, at least since I got obsessed with EDC a while back, but I’d admired his little pocket tools before that without even knowing they were all related. As happens with really cool things, people catch on and more and more people want them. Sometimes that’s a good thing, sometimes it isn’t, it depends on the intentions of the people behind the scenes. Whatever happens it’s the ones who stick by their guns that make me smile. Atwood has been linked to quite a bit recently which has upped the demand for his stuff 10 fold, making it next to impossible to get unless you are watching his site religiously. Some have suggested Peter Atwood should stop making each and every item by hand and hire people to help keep up with the demand, but he’s repeatedly said he’s not interested in that. He talks about it a bit in a post on his own blog today, and this last line is priceless:

“Bottom line, I’d much rather have fun and keep being creative than relentlessly pursue some misguided goal of trying to become a millionaire.”

That is so bad ass. Even if it makes his stuff that much harder to get, it makes it mean so much more. Nice work Peter.

Web 3.0 Shenanigans

web 1.0OK seriously people, everyone needs to knock this crap off right now. The next person who says “web 3.0” and isn’t being sarcastic gets fired. No questions asked, just pack your desk and get out. I mean really, this is like an Onion article that a year later comes true, we can’t just sit by and let this happen.

Look, saying “web 2.0” makes sense, barely, as it was the next step. There was the web, then a big crash, and then a come back so calling the comeback “2.0” is a quick easy way to explain that you mean the newer incarnation of the web, not the original information super highway where we all were getting excited over hypertext and blink tags. We can not get into versioning the web. There is simply what already happened and what has yet to happen. We can’t start debating web 2.75 vs web 3.10 vs web 4.0. It’s going to turn into one douchebag trying to out do another douchebag by just adding numbers in describing their product. The fact is that the term “web 2.0” is basically just marketing hype anyway, so adding on to that is just hype X 2. The quickest way to sound like a hack and make it very clear to anyone who knows what they are talking about that you don’t is to say web 3.0 and mean it.

So what do we call this next round of internetness? Um, how about The Internet. We really don’t need a fancy buzzword for it at all. We all have the basic knowledge to know that when you say the web today you aren’t talking about the super awesomeness of the <br> tag. Or even the </br> tag. Stop trying to glue glitter and sparkles on to something to cover up the fact that it’s a stupid idea, and just build something cool. Let the people writing the history books come up with a classification for it all, don’t try to brand something that doesn’t even exist.

AirTunes iHickups

Until this weekend I had some MP3s on one laptop, some on another laptop, and some on an external drive. I also had some on one of several iPods. When I wanted to listen to something at my house my options were usually connect my main laptop to my stereo via AirTunes and hope the songs I wanted to listen to were on there. If they weren’t I had to suffer through all kinds of cabling and reconnecting and it was a major pain. I decided I was going to put all the music in one place, set my back up laptop as a kind of MP3 server and leave it connected to the stereo all the time (via AirTunes). If I wanted I could access the library of songs with my other laptop as well. Here’s kind of what I was hoping to do:

room wifi

Once I got that set up I ran into a major problem. Nothing will play to my stereo via AirTunes without dropping out every 5-10 seconds. I’ve tried both laptops, changing channels on the network, restricting it to b only, and taking one laptop totally out of the loop. Still get the drop outs. This of course makes it completely unusable, which sucks because before it was at least a little usable. I’ve looked on the Apple forums and boards and seems other people are having the same problem but no one has any idea how to fix it. Crap!
